Creekside Residence by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson

It’s pretty rare for me to get completely blown away by modern architecture, it’s often the likes of Richard Neutra, Philip Johnson, and Frank Lloyd Wright that are the go to for a little architectural inspiration, but this home built only five years back by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson stopped me dead in my tracks this morning, it’s incredible. For the mid-century modern enthusiast this house is about the pinnacle of what is being created currently, finally I’ve come across a home that I can comfortably say is as considered and design conscious as the work these famous architects were undertaking in their heyday, I’ve really enjoyed comparing this house to those built in the 50’s and 60’s.

Browsing over this series I found myself noticing the ridiculous range of furniture that occupies the interior of the Creekside Residence, with items designed by Jean Prouvé, Serge Mouille, Poul Kjaerholm and Charlottte Perriand, among others. These don’t make the home for me they are just one layer of a remarkably balanced space, however as furniture goes we’re talking about the iconic items of some of the finest designers that have graced this earth in my humble opinion, which of course isn’t a bad place to start when furnishing a home.

It’s not just in the furniture that I was noticing elements that have come to signify the style of a handful of famous mid-century designers however, the tall living space with the ladder and the boxy linear windows reminds me an awful lot of Ray and Charles Eames house in Palisades, California for example. Another one that instantly sprung to mind was the Barcelona creation of Mies van Der Rohe and the pavilion area with its flat roof. It’s obvious that Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and his firm have entered into a similar school of thought when creating the home. Thats not to say they’ve simply amalgamated spaces from the celebrated homes of the past in order to create this great structure, however if you’re a bit geeky like us you begin to notice subtle details here and there.

I won’t give away too much because I’m sure there will be many of you that will enjoy discovering who’s designed what in the home and which areas are similar to other iconic builds. However If you’d like to learn more about this particular project or see what else the firm has created I’d recommend a trip across to their dedicated webpage. Enjoy!
