A Common Code – Weaving Indigo by Ceramic Artist Aor Sutthiprapha

I was looking for ceramics with texture to get inspired and came across these pieces by Aor Sutthiprapha that fit the bill exactly. Aor is a Thai born, Bangkok based ceramic artist and designer. Her series titled Weaving Indigo isn’t new by any means, originally produced as part of two series in 2011 and 2013, but as you already know, if it’s something that can stand the test of time then I’m not bothered one bit. These are fantastic pieces of art.

Aor references the Buddhist philosophy of using meditation as a defining point in all her works. Her project pages on her website for example have lovely little quotes and sayings that link back to her working method. As she hand builds these ceramics she focuses on every fingerprint, making sure her mind is in a fluid state, learning as the clay reveals its character. I think this is how she’s able to make distinctly different pieces, even though they are all very similar in their shape. The vessels have quirky differences that make them stand out. The etching technique is also unique, which leaves a weaving pattern across the surface of the ceramics.

I think many creatives will agree that working a craft intently gives you satisfaction because your mind has to be tuned in to the process. This clears your head and makes you focus on the present, which is very refreshing and revitalising indeed. I leave you with this quote below by Thich Nhat Hanh from Aor Sutthiprapha’s webite. More pictures and text can be found on her website, enjoy.

‘The mind can go in a thousand directions, but on this beautiful path, I walk in peace.’ -Thich Nhat Hanh
