Shilo is an Emmy Award-winning creative production company led by directors Jose Gomez and Andre Stringer. Their studios reside in New York and La Jolla, California, where they are internationally known for creating original and commissioned work that is powerful, provocative and visually extraordinary.

Shilo were chosen by GlobalHue Latino to create “Community,” a fun and imaginative broadcast spot that serves as a key component of the agency’s integrated campaign for the U.S. Census Bureau targeted to the country’s Latin American population. The spot combines live-action cinematography, character design, and stylized animation to convey the metaphor of shaping a community from clay.

“When you’re filling out a census form, you’re imagining what your community can be, and we wanted to infuse that sense of imagination into the spot” says Shilo co-founder and creative director Jose Gomez.

“Our goal was to ensure that every character or clay creation reinforced Brianna’s (girl in the spot) charming, easy-going personality, so we did things like making the characters very simple in design, then based on our extensive motion studies of clay, we used actual fingerprints and impressions in the CG renderings to make them feel more real, while using subsurface scattering techniques to take the look closer to the border between reality and imagination. At the end of the day, we just hoped it would feel really warm and perfect, and that it would make people smile.”
