Martin Visser, Exhibition of 1960’s Dutch Modernist Furniture at Rocket Gallery

Rocket Gallery in London recently opened an exhibition dedicated to the one and only Martin Visser, the dutch designer who from the late 1950’s to early 1970’s was Head of Design at ‘t Spectrum. He actually acquired the company during the 1960’s which I guess shows just how dedicated he was to the work he produced there, he basically shaped the company’s aesthetics and branding through his interest in functional design.

Although maybe Martin’s works may come across as quite industrial he really made sure that there was a strong crafted element in his furniture but at the same time experimenting with new techniques and using new materials. Much like many of the great designers from the past he worked very much hand in hand with the furniture makers themselves and often lent a hand in the production of the pieces. The plan was to create furniture which used honest materials but was simple in construction, as little as possible but with the clearest possible shapes. Following the “less is more” ideals some might say.

These specific photos above and below were kindly sent over by Rocket Gallery and have been taken by talented photographer Paul Tucker who’s got a great eye for angles and lines. So we get an exciting look at not only the Martin Visser furniture but inside the gallery itself and also some up-close details, which is always nice to see. Actually it’s not too often that I discuss a Dutch designer so it’s great to see these sorts of works from this side of Europe, hopefully I discover a few more to talk about and maybe you’ll see them crop up in our content over the next few months.

With the exhibition finishing July 1st it’s definitely worth a visit, so you’ll have to get yourself down there asap, I’ll be visiting myself that’s for sure. If you want extra information on this exhibition I’d recommend browsing the Rocket Gallery website through the link below, another designer that’s worth studying for a bit of inspiration.
