Works by Irish Furniture Designer Joseph Walsh

I’ve decided to bring across something a little more contemporary than what we’ve regularly been looking at here on the site, as I was really taken aback by the shire craftsmanship and vision that furniture designer Joseph Walsh presents through his creations. Founding his studio in 1999 Joseph has worked hard to craft his own creative path, self teaching himself everything he knows while pushing the boundaries of what a traditional piece of furniture should look like.

As you can see in what we’re hosting here today Joseph encases his designs with lots of imagination as he looks to find a new stand point where he can be recognised for his individual way of thinking as a designer. Browsing around his webpage I came across this quote which I think summaries the work he does and his ethos behind it pretty elegantly:

“I believe we can enhance the quality of our lives by surrounding ourselves with objects that possess values beyond their function or aesthetic, that possess intelligence in their creation, that one can interact with and that will stimulate senses each and every time one engages with them.”

So whilst I think I will always be someone that will consider function before form, it’s nice to come across another angle and consider it for a moment. I think the work that Joseph does is remarkable, particularly the poster bed up top which is on a level I’ve not come across before. I know some people will disregard these as impractical and a little precious but I think if you stop for a moment and reflect on the skill it takes to create something like this you soon realise how special these objects really are.
