It’s rare for me to post two product posts in such quick succession, but this week we received stock of a new book by Rossella Menegazzo & Stefania Piotti that I couldn’t help but share. We’ve updated our publication section quite extensively over the last few weeks, a few favourites include Alvar Aalto’s Second Nature book and The Good Life by Jasper Morrison, but this one titled Wa – The Essence of Japanese Design is particularly relevant to the shops overall ethos. So much so that I was really in awe when I flicked through it, to see all these beautifully designed objects in one document is quite special.

The book itself focuses on everyday objects and interior design elements, 250 to be exact that help examine the intricacies of Japanese design. Categorised by material, the same way in which we do on the shop, the objects span from the bamboo tools used in the tea ceremony to more recent innovations from industrial designers such as Sori Yanagi and Shiro Kuramata.

What struck me was the way that you can compare and analyse the link between design and material in Japan, alongside noticing their respect for culture and tradition. Overall a beautiful book which would slot in nicely in any bookshelf, I just need to find some space now …
