Inside the Tanner Goods Workshop

So it seems like we’ve been showcasing a lot of accessories this week, the clothing has died down for a little while a lot of shops are looking onwards to spring 2012. A brand that’s not seasonal as such is Tanner Goods, a small leather goods company who have made their way onto our website many times before. As I was searching through their website I came across some really nice imagery that showcases the inside of their workshop and some of the processes that they use when making their leather products. The studio is located in Portland, Oregon where they utilise the same tools that have been put to work for decades when manufacturing heritage leather goods. All of their sewing, which is also featured in some of the shots below, is done by a heritage saddle maker who has been honing his craft for over 45 years.

It’s nice to see products that can not only stand the test of time but they also get better with age and mature, some might use the Japanese term ‘wabi-sabi’ which means the beauty of imperfection. Whether it be roughness, irregularity, simplicity, these natural products develop depending on the user and how they interact with object itself. Recently I’ve been studying a lot about how humans come into contact and rely on hundreds of designed objects every day, particularly our complex relationship and how these play a part in each of our lives. It’s interesting to think that we don’t really notice these subtle tweaks that add productivity, whatever way you’re sure to enjoy these shots above and below. A great way to start the morning.
