New Lacquerware by Fujii Works

New Lacquerware by Fujii Works

This week we had a new arrival of Japanese lacquerware by Fujii Works. If you don’t know already Fujii Works is a small family collective consisting of husband and wife team Kenichi and Minako Fujii, who create lacquer ware from their studio in Hyōgo Prefecture. Urushi refers to the sap of the Urushi tree that is native to Japan and a handful of other far eastern countries. It's a natural living substance that contains no artificial chemicals. A product produced by the tree in attempt to fight its roots rotting and is ...
Interview with American Wire Sculptor Rodger Stevens

Interview with American Wire Sculptor Rodger Stevens

We’ve long been admirers of Rodger Steven’s work, a talented wire sculptor from New York. I remember locating him early last year and I’ve had the pleasure of exchanging conversation through email, so it made sense to do an interview with him so that other creatives can join in on the experience and admire his work. Rodger is quite unusual in the sense that he works in a medium that isn’t all that common. With wire he creates a variety of forms, from mobiles to wall hangings, each one is truly unique and stems from Rodgers own creative ...
Handmade Metal Cans and Boxes by SyuRo

New in the Shop: Handmade Metal Boxes and Cans by SyuRo

Japanese atelier SyuRo is based in Torigoe, Taito-ku, Tokyo. It’s located in an area filled with classic typesetters, canning factories, cloth wholesalers, and hardware stores. These also include small family-run factories engaging in meticulous “monozukuri”, a unique Japanese manufacturing style which mainly means craftsmanship and dedication towards continuos improvement. Today’s world has forgotten “monozukuri” in favour of “cheap mass production”, which has caused some ...

Japanese Craftsman and Making Processes by Adam Fulford

Last night I was supposed to be getting on with some work but I ended up spending half of it watching through these incredible videos placed up by Adam Fulford. I previously sat through one on the lacquer process a few months back but he’s uploaded a lot more and they’re ever so inspiring, I was in awe watching all the craftsmen create in silence, Adam seems to be living a dream of …

The Potters of Muchelney

John Leach is the eldest grandson of acclaimed potter Bernard Leach. Bob Robinson: Luthier by Troscan Design

I’ve been keeping a close eye out for work by Troscan Design, and late last night they released this brilliant film on founder and accomplished furniture designer Bob Robinson. Originally my goal was to show my appreciation for the furniture and the general forms that they create at Troscan Design, but it turns out Bob also has a passion for making string instruments and creates both classic and flamenco guitars. The video itself offers a …

Santa Julia House by Emilio Marin Studio

Emilio Marín studied at the University of Chile, opening his studio, Emilio Marin Studio, in 2005. Two years later Juan Carlos López joined the project. One thing I like about them both is their conviction when defending their work philosophy; they enjoy the day to day, doing what they want to, when and with whom they want to, and taking as long as they want to do it. Santa Julia House, presented here in this imagery above and below …

Kuroda x Toda, White Porcelain Collaboration by Taizo Kuroda and Hiroshi Toda

I feel like over the years my taste has been pretty consistent, even when I was just dipping my feet in as a younger designer I was drawn to the act of simplicity and clean lines. It didn’t really matter what it was, whether a building, a painting, a piece of clothing, or magazines and books, I sensed the appeal straight away. I suppose it could be deemed as a ‘lifestyle’ choice, but I’m not totally con …

Marcel Breuer – Design and Architecture

After receiving a few new books in the shop I decided to highlight one in-particular, that being a new publication by Vitra Design Museum titled ‘Marcel Breuer – Design and Architecture’. It’s a book that I highly anticipated myself as a lot of Marcel’s architecture has gone slightly unnoticed, we all tend to talk about his furniture but never his buildings. So this book amalgamates both, separating his work in to two sections and talks …
