Scientific Instruments & Spatial Experiments – Hanging Sculpture by Olafur Eliasson
I’ve been admiring these unique sculptures by Olafur Eliasson, an artist who lives and works in Berlin. Growing up in Iceland and Denmark, Eliasson’s work is driven by his interest in movement and space, as well as trying to make art relevant for our society.
Take these compasses which are an exploration of scientific instruments and spatial elements. Some are composed of copper wire that are then bent in to different shapes, these are held together using small magnets to resemble navigational instruments. These compasses are a simple and elegant study of spacial geometry, as well as having some sort of functionality.
What inspires me is that art is sometimes snubbed for being useless and having little purpose in the “real world”, but Olafur Eliasson has been able to sway this opinion by turning “thinking into doing”. Obviously you folks can read in to it what you will, but there’s some interesting text on his webpage that explains a lot of the intricate details and the conceptual philosophy behind the sculpture.
