Illuminating Intricacy – Netting Baskets by Dahye Jeong
The artistry of Dahye Jeong, winner of the 2022 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, speaks volumes of South Korea’s rich but diminishing tradition of horsehair craft. Going beyond mere preservation, Jeong breathes new life into this ancient art form with her contemporary interpretation, a feat that has earned her wide recognition, including an award at the Cheongju Craft Biennale in 2021.
Jeong’s creations are intricate horsehair vessels, their designs inspired by the traditional men’s headgear of the Joseon Dynasty. Her works are characterised by meticulously woven patterns and purposeful gaps, offering a delightful play of light and shadow. The artist’s unique perception of time as an abstract material finds expression in her craft, each strand of horsehair representing a slice of time encapsulating cultural narratives and centuries-old traditions.
Her masterpiece, ‘A Time of Sincerity,’ created using a 500-year old hat-making technique, embodies her dedication to reviving and updating tradition. This piece, celebrated for its delicate perfection, transparency, and lightness, secured Jeong the prestigious Loewe Craft Prize in 2022. As an artist, Dahye Jeong beautifully illustrates that the canvas of tradition is expansive and dynamic, capable of embracing the new while still revering the old.
