Tactility & Composition – TRAY by Finnish Designer Lotta Nieminen for AKTTEM

“Toys are not really as innocent as they look. Toys and games are the prelude to serious ideas.” A fantastic quote by Charles and Ray Eames who always saw value in creating playful experiences that everyone could benefit from. They even realised that everything was connected and needed to be present to create a relationship and bond with an object or design. A valuable lesson I think we all need to take in to consideration.

For partly this reason I wanted to highlight this work by Brooklyn-based Finnish designer Lotta Nieminen for AKTTEM, especially considering she’s a Graphic Designer and Illustrator and has been able to translate her skills on this object titled TRAY. This piece is a storage system that’s an interesting twist on a basic serving tray, when disassembled the different mats can be used to protect the table or be used while cooking. Very versatile.

Functionally it’s exciting, due to the materials being able to handle heat and resist water, the colour shapes and sizes are also a real draw and make them fun to use on a daily basis. This is an object that everyone can partake in, both young and old. I hope you like these and will view more of their work on the website below. It’s brilliant to see other creatives get involved and try to reinterpret their medium on to a new setting. Enjoy.
