The Art of Yuzen Dyeing – A Short Film on Master Artisan Keikou Tanabe

A fantastic film directed by Taylor Hawkins and produced by Steve Sakanashi. I’ve had my eye pinned on this directors profile since early 2017 when he produced a short film titled “In the Heart of Aizu” that helped educate us on the lacquer craftsman of Aizuwakamatsu in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This new piece by him carries on in a similar vein, showcasing the beautiful work of master artisan Keikou Tanabe.

Keikou Tanabe is taking part in the tradition of Yuzen Dyeing, a technique that was introduced to Japan from the continent in the 8th century. This process is part of the Kimono making process and requires the artist to apply dyes to the fabric in order to depict cultural life in Japan. Although there are very few craftsmen left, Keikou is still using her skills today and creating one of a kind garments that are sure to stand the test of time and bring joy to the wearer and viewer.

I think this film showcases the beauty that she is trying to convey in her work, as well as the passions she feels for this craft. This for her is a craft for a lifetime and is one of the reasons why she wakes up everyone morning and pursues this creativity.
