For Kate Duncan, the idea of strong, high-quality handmade furniture made using traditional joinery techniques has opened up the whole world of furniture design. Based in Toronto, Duncan works from her studio to produce bold heirloom-quality furniture. Each piece is handmade using traditional techniques, using only North American hardwoods which are responsibly sourced, as well as original solid brass hardware and leather accents. Without factoring in the beautiful design, the crafting process alone makes these valuable works of art that are sure to stand the test of time.
Heavily influenced by the Brutalist movement, characterised by large, monolithic and block shapes, Duncan’s furniture pieces all have a strong, bold look with rich colours thanks to her keen eye for selecting the right kind of wood. They are the ideal statement pieces to give a contemporary but still handmade edge to any space. Just by looking at the grouping here, Duncan’s signature craftsmanship is evident throughout her whole collection and I have to applaud her dedicated effort toward keeping the traditional ways of making furniture alive.
