Modular Living – DeCastelli ALPHA Modular Table by Martinelli Venezia
What are the hallmarks for sleek and elegant furniture design? Well, for one, it’s the perfect balance between form and function as well as its material properties and the overall proportions of the design. The ALPHA modular coffee table designed by Martinelli Venezia for DeCastelli features all the hallmarks for sleek and elegant design.
Martinelli Venezia is a design studio based in Milan and Palermo founded in 2015 by architects Carolina Martinelli and Vittorio Venezia. The studio focuses on architecture, furniture, exhibition and interior design and their pieces have been exhibited as artworks in their own right in galleries and museums around the world such as Musée du Louvre Paris, MAXXI in Rome and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
The ALPHA modular coffee table consists of 3 identical brushed copper rhomboid shapes that can be moved around or rotated to create numerous different configurations. The individual pieces of the coffee table can be rearranged into a hexagon, a straight line or a geometric S-shape, for example, or they can stand alone, separate from each other to occupy more space. The modularity of the table is a simple but highly effective characteristic that allows for so many architectural possibilities, making a good fit for any space. The modular aspect of the design also makes you feel more in control of your own environment and living space.
The individual pieces that make up ALPHA are hollow and can be used as storage space. The interior of each component is painted matte-black, which creates a slick design that highlights the unique texture of the copper. The ALPHA coffee table features the DeErosion technique, which creates a striped pattern of diagonal grooves that are seemingly carved out of the copper in a distinctive V shape or chevron-like pattern. This technique adds an elegant texture to the piece as well as enhancing its graphic quality and emphasising its geometric shape. The ALPHA coffee table is not finished with a protective varnish so that the copper maintains its antibacterial properties and reveals different stages of patina over time and with different exposures to oxidation. The unit can be returned to its original state by manual brushing and cleaning.
