Movement of Water – MELT Series by Furniture Maker Antrei Hartikainen

Sculptural meets functional with this series by Finish designer and master cabinetmaker Antrei Hartikainen. No doubt Antrei’s strong interest in design has helped his woodwork come on leaps and bounds. Not only is he able to make functional pieces of furniture, he’s able to put forward his own artistic sensibility. This is seen no better than in this new work for 2020 titled ‘MELT’ that’s inspired by the movement of water and when ice melts and turns in to a liquid again.

By using layered pine rods that are glued together Antrei is able to create a unique art composition that’s not only striking, but also related in concept to nature, thus having an organic feel that fits in with any interior space. I can imagine these pieces in a darker, rustic interior, I think they would blend in perfectly and the shadows must be terrific. They look very similar to stalactites that hang from a cave.

I think MELT as a series perfectly sums up Hartikainen’s current mindset when it comes to craft. By blurring the traditional craftsmanship with modern design we are able to see beautiful works of functional art such as this. I can’t wait to see what else his sculptural approach brings us in the near future. He’s bound to be pushing the boundaries!
