In Focus: Pete Eckert

This truly is inspiring, probably one of the most inspirational things I have seen in my lifetime. Not the way in which it’s filmed, although that’s also great, it’s the man featured in this film called Pete Eckert.

Pete became blind in the mid part of his life with the eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa. This video below shows how he decided to take up photography after going blind, he guides us through the process which involves composing, taking the pictures, and even developing in a darkroom.

The short film was made by Artists Wanted, in which Pete was the Grand Prize recipient in 2008. I recommend stepping over to Pete’s website where he tells his story in full, it’s really touching. I have a lot of respect for this man, I hope this small snippet that I picked out from his bio will help fill in any blanks.

“I slip photos under the door from the world of the blind to be viewed in the light of the sighted. I view my work during the event of taking the shot in my minds eye. I “see“ each shot very clearly, only I use sound, touch, and memory. I am more of a conceptual artist than a photographer. My influences come from my past memory of art and what I now find in the world at large.”
