These beautiful abstracts by talented photographer Rasmus Norlander are truly something to behold. I don’t like to think in conventional terms when it comes to my photographic exploits. I’m often looking for those stray series that stick out for being different and unique, especially those that involve shape and structural lines. Architecture is a great place to find such inspiration as buildings have many of these traits, but I have to applaud Rasmus for thinking outside the box and capturing these more ‘artistic’ photographs on the sideline of documenting various builds for architectural firms.

You see, Rasmus is a Swedish photographer who specialises in capturing architecture and construction. He mainly works with large and medium format cameras, which is partly how he gets such crisp clean images, with lots of textural detail. But to be honest, it all comes down to the person behind the viewfinder. It’s obvious to see he has a great eye when thinking about the bigger picture, with these he’s almost captured some unrecognisable imagery. The staircase is like a painting, you can picture individuals moving up and down throughout the day.

It might sound strange, but a documentary I watched on still life painting sums this up in many ways. I’ve never really appreciated the art, possibly due to my lack of artistic training, but viewing this film piece made me think about the reason for the practice and the idea that we take normal everyday materials and objects for granted. Much like this photography, it’s all about capturing those moments and freezing them for closer study, in this case capturing architectural details in an unusual way, showing pattern, texture and form that we otherwise wouldn’t have seen. Rasmus isn’t a one hit wonder either, he has many great works on his portfolio, so head that way now to see more fantastic architecture and other creative photographs.
