Marcel Breuer – Design and Architecture

After receiving a few new books in the shop I decided to highlight one in-particular, that being a new publication by Vitra Design Museum titled ‘Marcel Breuer – Design and Architecture’. It’s a book that I highly anticipated myself as a lot of Marcel’s architecture has gone slightly unnoticed, we all tend to talk about his furniture but never his buildings. So this book amalgamates both, separating his work in to two sections and talks …

Preserving the Authenticity of the Eames Furniture by Eames Demetrios

Although we’ve mainly been discovering craftsman and artists lately we’re definitely not looking past the fact that we enjoy various designers who have designed items that are currently being mass produced. In fact, my office bookshelf is littered with hoards of books from the likes of Jasper Morrison, Naoto Fukasawa, and the older generation like Aalto and Eames, the latter we’ll …

HAL Chair by Jasper Morrison

Although we generally tend to touch up mid-century style designers here I’m also a big admirer of designers like Jasper Morrison, Naoto Fukasawa, Dieter Rams and other industrial designers who are a bit more current and that are still working today. Naoto for example has a tendency to keep things simplistic and stripped down, always concerned with the emotions that we attach to objects over the years and how things function with us in our …

Vitra FICTION “Remind Me” by Florian Böhm

Vitra recently released this short film directed by Florian Böhm and is titled “Remind Me”. It’s the first from a series of videos named “Fiction” which looks to tell domestic stories that could have happened to any of us. It shows how these much prized pieces of furniture either drives an action forward by being involved in a humans everyday life, or how they just sit back camouflaged and become part of the ever evolving scene. The video itself is nicely …

Short Film on the Aluminium Chair by Charles & Ray Eames

Anyone fond of the Eames pair? Yes us too, which is why I was surprised to come across this fantastic film that documents the making of their iconic Aluminium Chair sitting with so few views over on Vitra’s Vimeo page. The duos design of this chair was put together in 1958 and looking back this was quite a significant 12 months for the creative couple. As the film below will soon exp …

The Pretzel Chair by George Nelson

George Nelson is one of my all time favourite designers (yes, I know I’ve got many) and is possibly one of the most important influential figures in American design. Like most of the creatives that I look up to he tended to cross through different areas, whether it be a graphic artist, an architect, an exhibition designer, or even a production designer, he covered all the bases. Some of you may know him for his creative and …

“Hang-It-All” Coat Rack by Charles and Ray Eames

The “Hang-it-all” coat rack by Charles and Ray Eames is in my eyes a genius piece of design. For one it’s playful and lighthearted, and two it serves it’s function well, to hang coats, hats and garments. But there’s a bigger concept and philosophy at play, these simple hooks and brightly-coloured wooden spheres were aimed at encouraging children to hang up all of their …

Case Study Imagery by Vitra Design

This morning I enjoyed having a browse through the Vitra website which always showcases some great furniture, I think they’re one of the better websites to have a look at and they seem to take great care over their web presence. Obviously inspiration isn’t always readily available on these more corporate sites due to the fact that they keep their photography shot in a professional studio with a white background, not …

Alvar Aalto Vases

I’ve become quite spontaneous with my posts here on the site, I used to use this space as a place to showcase random bits and bobs with no direct meaning but as time’s passed my taste has become much for refined and the direction of this website has become a lot clearer. I guess I want to offer something different to everything else out there and to ultimately have our own flavour and taste. Something I think …
