Naturally Haiti, The Artisans of Haiti

American fashion designer Donna Karan is the founder of many charities, one that stood out from the rest is a project titled the Urban Zen initiative which was founded with designer Sonja Nuttall. The whole point of Urban Zen is that it looks to mix commerce with philanthropy, something that we’ve featured and condoned before here on OEN.

This short film that I found, filmed by David Belle of Cine Institute, goes in-depth to feature the artisans of Haiti as they showcase their skills and craftsmanship. Donna looks to connect with these creative individuals to create timeless, seasonless accessories and housewares, celebrating the creative spirit of Haiti. In this video below you can see craftsmen and craftswomen making different wares such as wooden bowls, tobacco vases, and beautiful beadwork.

Best of all, all the proceeds from the purchases of artwork and crafts is donated directly to the Urban Zen Foundation so that they can continue to assist in developing and supporting sustainability in the Haitian artisan community.
