Drawing from Within – Circle Glasses by Designer Milena Kling

Circle Glasses by Designer Milena Kling 1

There is something very soothing about a circle. Its shape is a sign of infinity and there is perfection in the roundness of the design. Milena Kling incorporates circular shapes into her tableware to bring a geometric look to modern and traditional settings.

Milena Kling is a Berlin designer that creates contemporary designs for glass objects using traditional techniques and raw materials. Her current collection includes Circle glasses created for Berlin Gourmet Restaurant Ein unter Null.

In coming up with the design, she focused on the Japanese philosophy of drawing from within. This involves envisioning an object and drawing around it. It makes for a perfect shape that provides an ideal fit for the content. These are then distorted slightly during the making process, each of which is handblown and placed in a flexible copper mould to form them.

Kling incorporates elements of clear fluidity, strength and nature to pay homage to water and other liquids that may fill the glasses. The sides of the glass are etched with vertical textural lines thanks to the pleated copper sheets wrapped around each piece while being made. This gives the glasses a sense of depth and a sturdy feel when being held.

I applaud Milena for using her keen eye for good design and her ability to link craft with an object that has such a timeless quality.
