Mikado by Fredrik Paulsen – Pine Chairs for Parisian Gallery TORRI

This is not the first time, and surely not the last, that we’ll feature the work of Fredrik Paulsen. Well-known for his tie-dye coloured furniture, the Swedish-Serbian designer has kicked it back a notch with this simplistic set of green stained pine-wood chairs. This new collection is for an exhibition taking place at TORRI, a gallery located in Paris, and it’s very close to my own principles as it revolves around the idea of building.

Titled Mikado, Fredrik has deconstructed the function of a chair, reducing the complex form to a series of horizontal and vertical plane lines that rise from the ground. Anyone familiar with his work will know it’s rooted in play, and this particular collection is no different as he’s been able to take raw pine segments and turn them in to a number of different configurations creating a simple framework.

Taking pine-wood in this way and elevating it to a gallery setting not only questions the origin of construction, it also makes us stop and think about the link between tradition and craft in the field of furniture. For me Fredrik has took away any preconceptions regarding furniture that has come before, and has tried to analyse the actual function of a piece of furniture and the different lines that the viewer can see. This particular exhibition will be running until the 20th of June, 2015 a TORRI so I certainly recommend a visit if you’re in the area.
