Vases and Tableware by Japanese Maker Keiichi Tanaka 1

One individual that I’ve had my beady little eye on is Japanese maker Keiichi Tanaka, who I happened to write about last year alongside fellow Japanese creator Aya Omachi. So as I was searching for more information, also hoping that I’d run across new work I hadn’t seen before, it seemed to be my lucky day when I walked in to Keiichi’s personal portfolio site. Oddly enough, I didn’t find this website last year, so it’s either new or I could be going blind, since there’s work featured on there from 2006. Conversely, it just might be a new addition to google thanks to the English translation that they’ve added in, which is always good news for someone like myself.

I find it’s very rare to come across potters that have such an eye for the unique combination of sculptural and functional. What I mean by this is the fact that Keiichi mixes up his approach and experiments in both dimensions, it’s almost like a crazy mixture of the two which leads to a characterful final piece. Obviously from this process you’re going to get items that are possibly more for art galleries, but you’re also going to come across the perfect blend. Lets face it, there’s definitely times when we need that quirkiness in our life, so we can attach ourselves to something and show off our personality.

Overall Keiichi’s work presents a nice treat visually, so I picked out my favourite pieces for all of you to admire. Saying that, there’s plenty more on his website linked below, a destination for anyone who’s inspired by these sorts of things. I know I’ve said this many times before but I tend to be drawn to works that remind of buildings, mini-structures that I often associate with famous architects. One that crops up again and again is Le Corbusier, maybe it’s a coincidence but the parallel between this and Charles-Édouard Jeanneret’s works are quite poignant in my mind. I remember it all the way back from last year and they’ve definitely got that style about them, with the textures and the quirky shapes. You’re sure to find something that will get you inspired.
