New in the Shop – Uzumaki Tray by Tomoaki Nakano

Today we highlight the Azumaki Tray by Japanese lacquer artist Tomoaki Nakano.

This wonderful tray has been hand turned on the lathe before being sanded down and polished. The next stage is the application of lacquer, for which Tomoaki Nakano is so well known. Tomoaki focuses on applying thin layers leading up to a final thick layer to give a beautiful smooth finish that protects the wood and has anti-bacterial properties.

The black exterior contrasts the small lines running around the piece, offering a spiral pattern of sorts. Certainly one-of-a-kind trays exquisitely handcrafted in Japan.
