Journey of Light – Yasuke Lamp by Studio Brichet Ziegler
Studio Brichet Ziegler is an innovative design firm founded by French designers Caroline Ziegler and Pierre Brichet. Their goal is to create functional objects that bear both a technical and a poetic nature. For more than a decade the duo has been developing minimal-looking furniture and lighting pieces that are either produced through industrial means or handmade in the designers’ studio. More than following a mere trend, this studio is committed to conceiving designs that will remain relevant across multiple generations.
Ziegler and Brichet met more than 15 years ago at Collectif Dito where they began collaborating on various projects together. In 2010 they decided to open their own studio and have now gone on to partner with manufacturers to produce chairs, lamps, tables, and benches on an industrial scale. Their limited edition collection of handmade functional objects named ‘By Hands’ is a personal interest of mine, as it shows their hands on approach to the design process.
One of the studio’s recent designs is the Yasuke table lamp, which is part of the 2021 range from DCW éditions, a French enterprise that produces the designs of a myriad of creative minds. Interestingly, this minimalist steel and aluminium lamp is named after the first foreign-born samurai warrior, Yasuke, who arrived in Kyoto, Japan in 1579 from Africa. The duo wanted to metaphorically represent “a journey of light”, using a traditional but modernist aesthetic to produce a timeless piece that can transform the atmosphere of any room.
“We believe in craft, processes, people, manufacturers, and local production for the future.” – Caroline Ziegler and Pierre Brichet
