Well Married – Candlestick & Plant Holders by Claudia Moreira Salles

I think there’s something noble about being rooted in one material, exploring this in all its detail and making the most out of it. In my opinion though when you are a designer you really need to work hard and find all the possible combinations in terms of function and aesthetic. Once you can narrow down a range of materials you can work out exactly the best ways in which to harness them.

Brazilian designer Claudia Moreira Salles inspired me in this way, combining soft, hard, cold and warm materials to create intrigue and function in one object. It was also nice to read that she works hand in hand with local craftsmen to create these objects, especially woodworkers as they were one of the main reasons for her big push in to furniture design. Claudia looks to explore what materials work in combination with wood and what harmony or friction is caused through this collaboration.

Although all of her works are fascinating, I picked out this series of plant and candle holders that particularly caught my eye. There was something appealing about her mix of wood with the stone, both contrasting in the different qualities that they hold. It’s also a nice touch that you can interchange between the addition of a plastic tube for presenting plants or taking this element out and showcasing a candle. I hope you like these and will view more on her portfolio linked below. She is a talented designer.
