Lacquered Zelkova Bowl – Handmade by Hiroyuki Sugawara for OEN Shop
Mr Hiroyuki Sugawara is quite the maker. He’s possibly one of the most popular craftsman in the store, he seems to have attracted many fans and his work has become particularly sought after. This week I’m highlighting one of his larger items in the shop, the Lacquer Zelkova Bowl.
Usually we stock smaller items from Hiroyuki Sugawara, such as his Red Lacquer Chestnut Cup or Black Lacquer Teaspoon, but this large lacquered zelkova bowl is an anomaly. It really is large enough to be a centrepiece on a table, and the grain makes them quite beautiful and striking on the eye.
Hiroyuki turned the piece on a lathe at his studio in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. As you can imagine, it was quite hard to properly shape this piece but I think he’s done a fantastic job. Hopefully you do too, and can admire the photos in the shop. We hope you have a great week.
