I find it interesting that as this project evolves I find myself becoming more concerned about highlighting techniques that otherwise might be concealed. Sometimes it’s difficult to appreciate simplicity as the details are often hiding and have been reduced to the point of abstraction.
American artist Maura Segal is a perfect example of this. Although her works might seem as though they are flat paintings, each line is placed by hand using paper and the surface itself has been raised using various techniques. This mixed media approach is very exciting as it gives them depth and intrigue that can sometimes be flat and lacklustre.
All of these paintings are one of a kind and are completely made by hand. Who said ‘art’ couldn’t be approached the same way a craftsman would an object.
