Interiors and Furniture at sdr+ (System Furniture Dieter Rams)
It’s always been a dream of mine to own the 606 shelving system by Dieter Rams, so today’s post is partly about that, although I covered my fascination with it more extensively in a previous post, but also because some recent news has come about. Vitsoe have just announced that as of 1 January 2013 they will become the exclusive licensee of Dieter Rams’s complete collection of original furniture designers.
This is what Dieter had to say over on the Vitsoe website:
“Vitsoe’s disciplined business practices and manufacturing intelligence are in true alignment with the values of my design. This makes Vitsoe the ideal partner to present my products worldwide and it is for this reason that I have given Vitsoe the licence to sell not only 606 Universal Shelving System but my complete portfolio of furniture designs in Germany and throughout the world. In addition, Vitsoe’s growing international presence and continued commitment to the constant improvement of my products ensure that my furniture is in the best hands for the years ahead.”
So as I was routing around for more information at lunch I stumbled into the sdr+ website, standing for ‘System Furniture Dieter Rams’, and I thought it would be nice to bring over some imagery from their website. It runs in line with the new announcement and I thought the furniture involved was both inspiring and extraordinary. Plus, we can also see some other famous designers dotted around the living spaces as well!
Actually, the amount of other famous designers that I admire featured in these images is beyond incredible, to name a few we’ve got a selection of Eames furniture, most notably the Eames walnut stool and Lounge chair, some Aalto pieces, the Armchair in the fifth picture being my personal favourite. Others include Marcel Breuer, Alexander Calder, with his brilliant hanging mobile on the ceiling, even Giet Rietveld gets a look in on the sdr+ website.
This company actually produces high-quality furniture systems designed by Dieter Rams and Thomas Merkel, with the furniture being produced solely in Germany. I’m not sure where this now leaves sdr+ with the Vitsoe licensee deal that’s just been announced today, but it will be interesting to see how it all develops either way. Since Vitsoe’s headquarters and production is based in London you would think that the furniture might be produced there now too, or maybe they’ll just strike a deal, who knows.
For now you can admire this imagery from the sdr+ website, I’d reccomend having a browse in each category to get some inspiration. I personally liked the fact that you could see how useful Dieter Rams’s products are and also the universality of the 606 shelving system inparticular, it’s a stunner! Enjoy.
