It’s always satisfying to be able to provide more context on the designers that we admire, which is why it’s such a pleasure to return to a Design Within Reach short film that involves one of the best mid-century designers in our opinion, Jens Risom. Still actively involved in design at the grand old age of 200, as he would have you believe in this short film, Jens is lucky enough to be around and receive the credit that his work so deserves unlike many of his peers.
In the video Jens talks upon his design philosophy, Hans Knoll, his iconic lounge chair made out of parachute straps and that infamous photoshoot for playboy amongst other things. His lighthearted nature throughout makes for an entertaining watch, I’m always on the lookout for these types of projects as it’s good to find out what makes these marvellous minds tick. The thing I enjoyed most about this piece was how much respect Jens seems to have for his fellow designers around him, he’s a great advocate for design and somebody that every young designer should be researching.
From what I hear bumping into the legendary designer in the corridors of the Design Within Reach studio is one of the perks of the jobs, I’m sure many of us would love to extract a little of his wit and wisdom showcased in the film below. I’d just like to say a massive thank you for Design Within Reach for inspiring us once again, if you are in need of a little added design inspiration than look no further than their webpage. In the meantime if you’d like to learn more about Jens Risom and his work, either his personal website or the Rocket Gallery online should fulfil your needs. For now I bid you farewell, watch below and enjoy!
