New at OEN Shop – Functional Woodwork by Sanobe Sangyo

We’ve been trying out best to represent smaller workshops and highlight more makers in the shop. The slight downside is the lead time and the shipping from different locations, but we feel it’s a worthy cause to highlight such amazing craftsmanship and make it accessible to more people.

One workshop I’ve been working closely with is Sonobe Sangyo that’s located in Odawara in central Japan. This city is known for beautiful craft, especially woodwork and lacquerware, with each piece going through several processes. The craftsmen select the wood, dry it, use the lathe to craft each piece, and finish them with a protective coating.

Thanks to Sonobe Sangyo’s forward thinking ideas, the Meibokuwan bowl in 1996 received the Good Design Award, as well as their new Nitori Plate produced in 2019. Functional craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.

Please note: These ship directly from Japan. Usually there is a 1-2 week lead time if out of stock. Please contact us if you would like more information.
