Toshifumi Momose’s Hinoki Series

People talk as though artists, designers and craftsmen are 1000 miles apart in thought pattern and ideology. There’s more of an interesting interplay going on between them all and woodworker Toshifumi Momose shows it most beautifully in his collaboration collection with Japanese industrial designer Keita Hanazawa.

Also trained as a designer, Toshifumi crafts these stunning pieces of tableware on the lathe from Japanese Cypress. All have a slim, modernist form with defined angles that create a sharply cut appearance. I was particularly taken aback by the contrast of these works sitting on a dark wood background as the natural beauty of the cypress wood pops out and brings ample warmth.

We have uploaded Toshifumi’s works to the shop and are now taking orders. It’s great to support such a young craftsman who has a strong vision for the future of contemporary woodworking.
