Usually I wait a little while before I start a feature on a prospective maker. I like to get a feel for their work, as well as start a relationship with the craftsman. But when I came across the work of Akihiko Sugita it was almost a match made in heaven, the work is not only simple and refined, he’s also a young maker that’s really pushing the lacquer craft and giving it a contemporary twist.
Situated in the beautiful landscape of Kanazawa in Ishikawa prefecture, here Akihiko crafts his wooden objects which are then hand finished with lacquer. His workshop is a fantastic setting and the wooden interior, which hosts both light and shadow, really fits the fine forms and unique textures that are applied to his functional lacquerware.
So to compliment a brand new maker in the store we have also put together a special feature to coincide. You can view the feature here, and I’d also urge you to click along to see the works that he creates on our shop collection page. We hope you like it and we’re sure these pieces will look brilliant in any interior space. If any sell out just get in touch and we’ll be able to organise a custom order. Have a nice weekend.
