New Maker at OEN Shop – Woodwork by Japanese Craftsman Eiji Hagiwara
New work is coming thick and fast, especially after last week which saw us release some new lacquerware by Akihiko Sugita, and also a feature page documenting his studio and work. This time I’m showcasing some new work in the shop by a fellow woodworker that’s based in Saitama Prefecture who goes by the name of Eiji Hagiwara.
Mr Hagiwara is inspired by the Shaker design philosophy, “to be necessary and useful”. The Shakers inspired him to pursue woodworking as a full-time career and make it his lifework to produce functional objects. He has a particularly nice eye for crafting tableware, such as chopsticks, spoons and dishes. His goal is to utilise the nature of the tree to the best of his ability, following the grain of the wood and making sure it fits naturally in the users hands.
Our first collection from Eiji includes a stunning lined lacquer dish, some pine chopsticks, and a beautiful black walnut chopstick case. Hopefully you like these new works and will go on over to the shop to see more. Have a great weekend!
