New Maker – Japanese Potter & Craftsman Akihiro Nikaido at OEN Shop
I have a feeling that this year is going to be a special one. I already have a number of makers that I’m preparing to showcase, alongside some new features to share with you all. One maker that I’m excited to introduce is Akihiro Nikaido, I’ve been following this potter for a number of years now and I’m really pleased to represent his work in the shop.
Based in Mashiko, which is highly regarded for its pottery and craft, Akihiro focuses on creating objects that stimulate all five senses. Specialising in ceramics for the tea ceremony, he has actively worked with tea masters, calligraphers, sweet makers and chefs to create tea gatherings that enrich all of the senses. His pottery is an off-shoot of his passion for tea, often designing and building concepts around his collections.
Take for example the ‘Mist’ collection, coming in the form of a teapot, vase and small cup, the idea behind them was to create a particular experience when using them in daily life. Fired at a very high temperature in his climbing kiln, they are quite obviously handmade with tiny defects showing through, but the thin forms leave contemporary objects that are sure to stand the test of time. At the moment we only stock a small selection by Akihiro, but we can’t wait to build on it and add more in the near future.
