Pottery by Watanabe Takayuki
Today we revisit some pottery, this time the works of Japanese craftsman and creative Watanabe Takayuki based in Izu, Shizuoka. We’ve talked about our love for this expressive art many times before and I guess this set inspired me thanks to photographer Nazara Lázaro who’s been taking pictures for Watanabe in Japan. I found it fascinating to hear that Nazara has been living in a zen monastery, 180 kilometers from Kyoto, at the Antaiji Temple of Peace for over two months. Must be quite an inspirational experience to go through something like that, sometimes I wonder if I could actually do it myself with all this technology around on a day-to-day basis. It would be good to go back to basics and strip back to the bare necessities, appreciate what I do have at this moment in time.
As I browsed Watanabe Takayuki’s portfolio website I thought I would pick up a selection of imagery that was eye pleasing in itself and also ones that gave you an idea of the ceramic work that he makes. I would of loved to have seen a series of photography from inside his studio, maybe Nazara will undertake this project?, but I guess you can’t have it all. So for now these ones above and below are top notch in my opinion but there are plenty more on his website via the link below. I also recommend checking out his contact page since you can see a shot of him in his workshop, looks like an amazing little room full of simple wooden tables and chairs.

Amazing find! Do you know if they’re available for sale at all? Probably some of the nicest pottery I’ve ever seen…
